J D Dalvi was born in Kolhapur in 1922. He comes from a family of artists, his father Dattoba Dalvi was one of the artists’ in the Durbar of Maharaja of Kolhapur (Shahu Maharaj). Since completing a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Bombay in 1945, he has had many exhibitions of his paintings. He is now one of the senior most artists in the country.
He has held many exhibitions in India and his paintings and sculptures are valued and held by private collectors’ across countries such as the United states, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Germany, Mauritius, South Africa and Canada.
J D Dalvi has been felicitated and recognised by All India Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi as a ‘Veteran Artist’ in 1993. He is the founder president of the Kolhapur Artist Guild and a trustee of one of India’s oldest art school, Dalvi’s Art Institute, Kolhapur.
He is a self taught sculptor and has to his credit many statues in a variety of media like bronze, fiber and plaster. He started sculpting in 1948 and some of his works include statues of prominent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, former Vice President of India, Shri. B D Jatti and Smt. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
He paints portraits, landscapes, compositions in a creative impressionist style in oil, water and acrylic.
His is holding his exhibition at Nehru Centre, Mumbai from January 27th to February 2nd, 2009 along with his son, Ajey J Dalvi, who teaches Art at Dalvi’s Art Institute, Kolhapur.
